. Kelcie begins as a foster child, living in a group home in the human world, after being rescued from Boston Harbor.

s the story opens on her twelfth birthday, she's forced to repeat magical words and follows a dangerous ice fairy. She ends up journeying through a tree portal into the Otherworld - at the Academy, which trains warriors to protect the Lands of Summer. She meets one-handed Niall. Acceptance into the school requires passing various tests. They succeed together.

he training is hard and Kelcie demonstrates magical abilities well beyond what a first year should be able to do. She gets a message from her long lost father, who warns her to run back to the human world and hide. She makes friends. There are escalating attacks that they fend off together. Kelcie struggles to control her growing powers, and to be true to herself.

inally the school itself is attacked by forces of the Winter Queen and it's up to Kelcie and her friends to save the day.
