T
he first happened on New Year's Eve, 1999 and Ella was the only survivor. Now she's a therapist, still haunted by her past. The police suspected one victim's boyfriend, Vince, who fled and was never found. One teen (Jesse) also survived the second attack in 2015. The school principal asks Ella to talk to Jesse in the hospital. She's shocked to learn that the perp said the same parting words to Jesse as he had done to her.

very pregnant FBI Special Agent Sarah Keller is assigned to the case and soon interviews Ella. Vince's younger brother Chris is now a public defender and hasn't seen Vince for fifteen years but keeps searching for him. The story moves back and forth in time, interspersing past with current events. When Jesse is arrested for the ice cream store murders, Chris takes the case, and soon meets Ella as well. They work together to find out what happened.
