Though I haven't read any of the earlier books in this mystery series by Andrea Carter, I was immediately attracted to it because of its setting in Donegal, having grown up in Northern Ireland. Murder at Greysbridge is the fourth in the series, which is being adapted for television.

It's set in Inishowen and its lead is solicitor Benedicta 'Ben' O'Keeffe. As this episode opens in the summertime, Ben's assistant Leah is about to be married at the lovely (recently restored) Greysbridge Hotel, reputed to be haunted. Leah's future in-laws will be arriving by boat from the tiny island off the coast where they live.

To complicate Ben's life further, she's been offered a job in the States and needs to make a decision very soon. All starts off well at the hotel until a young American drowns, the wedding guests looking on - was it really an accident? A second death follows and Ben's ex, Sergeant Tom Molloy, shows up to investigate, the wedding guests all suspects.

The modern mystery intertwines with the hotel's dark history which is gradually revealed - the ghost of young Louisa Grey is still believed to roam the site. Ben does her best to investigate past and present mysteries, while dealing with conflicting feelings for her ex, Tom, and Harry, the handsome new doctor in town.

Ben is an appealing lead and Murder at Greysbridge an intricate, engaging mystery that ends on a cliffhanger of a decision point for its heroine.
