The Deathwatch Beetle is the ninth in Kjell Eriksson's quirky Swedish police procedural series starring homicide Inspector Ann Lindell (now retired). Ann has always been conflicted and vulnerable in her personal life, while stubborn and persistent about solving any mystery that comes her way.

The story opens on a 2015 murder, the body tipped overboard from a boat afterwards. Around the same time, Cecilia Karlsson disappeared from the island of Gräsö, leaving her parents wondering what happened to her. Fast forward four years. When Ann receives a tip that Cecilia has been seen in Lisbon, her curiosity is aroused and she starts digging, even though she has no authority to do so. She doesn't like mysteries.

Ann has renewed her relationship with Edvard Risberg and visits him often on Gräsö. She interviews Cecilia's parents, controlling Rune and faithless Gunilla. Then Cecilia returns to the island in disguise, for a funeral. She stays in an unused cabin, her company 'Happiness and betrayal. Death and flight. Loneliness and revenge.' Island black sheep Nils Lindberg soon finds her, has long adored her, and is pulled into her schemes.

Readers see them play out, as Ann gets closer and closer to the truth (helped by Edvard's knowledge of the island and islanders) of all that happened years before - and it involves someone else who went missing in 2015. She finally does find answers, as violence escalates to an exciting - and surprising - conclusion.
