A
decade before Ruth Ware's mystery,
The It Girl
, opens, Hannah was a student at Oxford University, where her
It Girl
roommate April Clarke-Cliveden was murdered. It was Hannah's evidence that led to the conviction of Oxford porter John Neville, who has now died of a heart attack in prison.
N
ow Hannah has married Will, one of a cluster of close friends in April's first year Oxford orbit - Will, Hannah, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily. Hannah and Will now live in Scotland and are expecting a baby. Their life is disrupted when a journalist contacts Hannah, sharing new evidence and questioning Neville's guilt.
T
he story moves back and forth in time between past and present events, as Hannah becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened. She grows increasingly distressed that she might have hurt an innocent man, especially when what she learns points to one of her closest friends.
