A
Blizzard of Polar Bears
is the second (following
A Solitude of Wolverines
) in Alice Henderson's environmental thriller series starring wildlife biologist Alex Carter. Though I missed the first book, it was easy to jump into the action-packed (and often gory) sequel.
N
ow, Alex has left Montana and its wolverines to study polar bears in the Canadian Arctic, where their population is threatened. She tracks them in a helicopter and uses a tranquilizer gun to allow her to descend and study them. However she soon realizes that someone doesn't want her study completed - her pilot quits, equipment goes missing and samples are stolen. Why? Fortunately, Alex has a self appointed guardian angel, one who helped her in Montana as well.
I
t all begins with '
the find of the century
' by a marine archaeologist in Hudson's Bay. Sadly, he's murdered before he can claim credit - wrong place at wrong time. Alex finds his body. On a helicopter outing with new pilot Casey MacCrae, they find a poacher's illegal set guns (that kill polar bears) and then their helicopter is shot down. What follows is a desperate, action-packed struggle to survive and make sense of what's happening, as they're hunted across the ice.
T
here are firefights (on the surface and underwater), rescues and and betrayals, and a coded message to solve. Though the villain of the piece is rather a caricature,
A Blizzard of Polar Bears
is a gripping read. And don't miss the informative
Afterword
on environmental concerns in the Canadian Arctic.
