The Darkness Knows brings back retired detective Konrad (of The Shadow District) to investigate a cold case. The story opens on a gruesome discovery by an Icelandic guide accompanying German tourists on a glacier tour - a human head emerging from the ice. It turns out to be that of businessman Sigurvin who went missing thirty years before. The man's business associate, Hjaltalin, was held briefly but not charged. Now, he's arrested again and Konrad is called back in, as he's the only one the prisoner will speak to. Hjaltalin, who has cancer, dies soon afterwards. Indridason also shows a man, Vilmar, being killed after recognizing someone in a sports bar (not Hjaltalin) from the murder scene - there was no follow up on the dead man's tip to the police. How do these deaths relate? Villi's sister contacts Konrad, sure that her brother was murdered. Despite himself - and against the wishes of the police, Konrad is sucked back into a case that long troubled him. He keeps digging, and discovers that Hjaltalin was framed. As the cold case warms up, Konrad steadily follows leads in Villi's death. His solid police work eventually pays off. He tracks down the perps - and deals with them in his own fashion. What makes Indridason's writing so compelling is his intricate characterization that brings his personalities to vibrant life.
