ere's an exciting debut,
Down Range
, an action-packed military thriller, set in Afghanistan and in the High Plains of northwest Texas. It introduces former Green Beret Garrett Kohl, who is now a decorated DEA special agent.
T
he story opens on the kidnapping of ten-year-old Asadi Saleem - where and why? We have to read on to find out. Only three days earlier, we join Garrett in Afghanistan, where his team tackles opium production. After observing a village massacre - he rescues a fleeing child, Asadi.
K
nowing that the killers (probably corrupt factions in the Afghan government) might come after Asadi (a witness), CIA base chief Kim Manning asks Garrett to handle protective custody - in the U.S.. Garrett takes the boy home to the Kohl Ranch in Texas.
G
arrett's cantankerous father Butch gradually takes to Asadi, who picks up English fast. He re-connects with his brother Bridger, a lawyer who's concerned about threats from a drug cartel. Seems that Bridger might also have got himself involved in money laundering.
C
hildren are soon at risk, not only Asadi. Plenty of blood is spilled. The Kohl brothers ride to the rescue though it seems a forlorn hope, but it ends well with an unexpected rescue, a multimillion-dollar bonfire - and a new job for Garrett. I look forward to more of this fast moving, engrossing series.
