Island of Thieves is the sixth in Glen Erik Hamilton's series starring super-thief/ex-Army Ranger Van Shaw. Van's grandfather Donovan was himself a skilled thief and safecracker, who taught his grandson all the tricks of the trade. Van walked away from that life when he joined the military, but somehow seems to keep being pulled back in, in some form or another.

This episode opens on a murder in New Orleans, its connection to the rest of the story unclear until much later. Next, readers join Van Shaw in Seattle as he steals an item from a warehouse, hired to do so by its owner, magnate Sebastien Rohner. Turns out this was a test of Van's abilities. He's offered a lucrative security gig, to protect Rohner's art collection on an island estate during a business meeting - where one of the attendees might be a thief.

Something smells sour in this gig from day one and it worsens when Van comes upon a dead body - that of one of the meeting guests, who later turns out to be a Chinese government operative. Van becomes a prime suspect and realizes that he must work to clear his name. There's a femme fatale in on the action, as well as Wren with whom Van has an open but strong relationship. Another murder, with planted evidence pointing to Van, sends him on the run, wondering what a chemical sample in a vial has to do with the killings.

Of course, he does figure it all out, with a little help from his friends, old and new - and heads back to the island for an explosive conclusion. If you enjoy action-packed thrillers with a slightly shady lead, then dive into this series.
