Though this is the third in John McMahon's P.T. Marsh series, it's the first episode I have read. Marsh is a homicide detective in small town Mason Falls, Georgia. Marsh's wife and son were driven off the road by a paid killer, and died years before. He's partnered with Remy Morgan.

As the episode opens, they're called to a middle school shooting - one gunman with three students and two teachers held hostage, one of the teachers gut shot. One student is Police Chief Dana Senza's daughter. From the roof of a shed, Marsh receives a call from Governor Monroe who calls in a debt, ordering Marsh to take out the shooter. Marsh refuses but then does so anyway when it looks like the hostages are in imminent danger.

They learn that the shooter was working on a story and was certain he was onto something big. How did that lead him to the school with a gun? Was he just crazy? They catch another case of two Latin men shot by a pro. An old enemy takes on a position on the police oversight board and has it in for Marsh, who foolishly gets involved with the art teacher who survived the shooting.

It's a convoluted plot, focused around both Marsh's obsession with finding out who was behind his wife and son's deaths; and also on the development of a prototype 3D-printed sniper rifle. Where is it going to be used? Marsh keeps chasing the ghosts of his past - and finds them in high places.
