As it opens, we meet Addison, who has no memory of anything before the last two years, but does have scars that she wonders about. Now she celebrates her engagement to Gabriel, from a wealthy and privileged family. They are deeply in love, and Gabriel's sister Hailey has become a close friend, but Addy worries over what dark secrets her past might hold. So does her future mother-in-law, Blythe, who hires an investigator to find answers. In parallel with Addy's new life, readers are introduced to psychiatrist Julian in Boston, whose wife Cassandra disappeared two years before, leaving their seven-year-old daughter Valentina badly missing Mommy. Julian has also hired a detective. The story moves back and forth between past and present, gradually revealing what took Addy's memory. We learn that Ed, a truck driver, gave Addison a ride on a New Jersey highway and took her home to his wife Gigi. They have become like parents to her. She seems like such a lovely person - why do the few memories that bubble up hold rage and violence? Why do her nightmares include 'blood and dead bodies'? Tension rises as Addison - and readers - get closer to answers, which are terrible ones. But by the end, there's no longer a stranger in her mirror.
