T
he Butcher's Daughter
is the third episode in Wendy Corsi Staub's
Foundlings
series, starring investigative genealogist Amelia Crenshaw. She specializes in re-uniting long lost family members. Though I missed the earlier episodes, that didn't detract from my enjoyment of this one.
A
melia was herself adopted after being abandoned as a newborn in a church. Though she hasn't resolved the puzzle of her own origins, she has helped many others. This time, she's been hired by NYPD Detective Stockton Barnes to find the daughter he had left with her mother - for her own good.
I
n parallel with that search she starts to look into the murder of a recent client of her own. At the same time, readers are given insights into the actions and plans of an obsessed killer, Gypsy Colt, who left Cuba to hunt her own siblings, all the offspring of a serial rapist and cult leader.
I
t's an intricate plot with links between the various threads that readers follow. As Amelia and Stockton race to prevent more deaths, she learns more about her own fascinating back story and finally meets her biological family.
The Butcher's Daughter
is an engrossing read.
