I
f you enjoy cozy canine mysteries, you'll like this one,
The Finders
by Jeffrey B. Burton, first in the
Mace Reid K-9
series. Its young doggy heroine, golden retriever pup Elvira, has a very special talent, remarkable even for a cadaver dog. After being adopted by Mason '
Mace
' Reid, Vira works with him (actually she does most of the work) in human remains detection in the Chicago area.
A
nother lead in this series is Chicago Police Officer Kippy Gimm. She's the one who finds Elvira close to death at the scene of an apparent suicide. Kippy loves dogs and follows up to make sure that Vira finds a good home. This leads to her slowly becoming close to Mace as well, and they end up working together to track down the serial killer dubbed
Everyman
by the media.
V
ira and Mace's other cadaver dogs save the day repeatedly when Mace is targeted by Everyman. Vira's talents are almost supernatural - '
she's a canine Madame Curie
' who can scent DNA. So, of course she saves the day. Though it's all highly improbable,
The Finders
is an engaging, feel good mystery, the perfect antidote to anxious times.
