Shattered Earth: Approaching Extinction    Dr. Ian Prattis Order:  USA  Can Manor House, 2019 (2019) Softcover, e-Book     Reviewed by Hilary Williamson It would be nice to believe that the dire warnings of Dr. Ian Prattis's Shattered Earth: Approaching Extinction are exaggerated, but they ring all too true. Dr. Prattis is Professor Emeritus at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. His book, that blends fiction and non-fiction, is aptly dedicated 'For the brave children of our world'. He begins with Broken Glass, 'a metaphor for the broken cycles of Climate Systems that place humanity in dire straits.' Historical and psychological perspectives from 2080 make dark but credible reading. The author rails against the 'complex web of powerful corporate and government interests that became known as the carbon cabal.' He details the sad state in which we find ourselves now. Dr. Prattis covers young people's activism (including Greta Thunberg); high impact strategies in reducing CO2; the Extinction Rebellion civil disobedience campaign; and a '2050 scenario of extreme severity'. He tells us that we need to apply something like the Marshall Plan strategy after World War II to the 21st century Climate Crisis. He discusses the notion of impermanence, to propel us to live differently, 'counter to the ecology of greed', and continues to share his own spiritual development and growth in understanding through experiences around the world as well as fictional short stories, teaching tales. Though not all will relate to the latter, there is much to be learned from the entire volume of Shattered Earth.
