Let the Dead Speak is the seventh (following After the Fire) in Jane Casey's British police procedural series starring Detective Maeve Kerrigan, partnered with the abrasive DI Josh Derwent. He annoys everyone around him, but they have each other's backs.

As the novel opens, eighteen-year-old Chloe Emery returns home (at a time when she's not expected) to find blood everywhere and her mother missing. DS Maeve Kerrigan, newly promoted and mentoring young DC Georgia Shaw (whom she doesn't like much), investigates. Chief Inspector Una Burt remains the boss. Josh Derwent is still part of the team and always wants in on the action.

They investigate the neighbors and turn up all sorts of wrongdoings, but not the murderer. Then Chloe and a younger girl go missing. There are more deaths and Maeve is almost added to the list after she behaves recklessly once more, but she closes her case. Maeve is an engaging lead and Let the Dead Speak lives up to the high standard of this engrossing series.
