She escaped but was left with a visible scar - and some memory loss - from neurosurgery required to treat a severe head injury. Her obsessed kidnapper, Levi Brooks, has not been found. So she's flown to remote Benedict, Alaska as Beth Rivers, intending to hide until he's captured. There, she's booked to stay at Benedict House, not realizing that it's a halfway house for female offenders. Beth keeps in touch with the lead investigator on her case, Detective Majors, hoping for progress in the police hunt for Brooks. In Benedict, police Chief Gril knows her history but keeps it to himself. He's pretty busy when Beth arrives in town, investigating a local death, that of Linda Rafferty - could it be murder? Beth settles in and even takes on an unpaid job, taking over the local paper, the Benedict Petition. She buys a truck and start digging into the local mystery of Rafferty's death, intrigued because of her own background as a thriller writer. She starts to feel comfortable - until she receives a voice message, and the voice sounds awfully like that of her kidnapper. Memories of her ordeal at his hands start to come back. Beth helps solve the local mystery, but her own situation remains unresolved at the end of Thin Ice, leaving readers anxious for more.
