S
tone Cold Heart
is the second (following
Sweet Little Lies
) in Caz Frear's London Metropolitan Police series starring twenty-something DC Cat Kinsella. Cat is partnered with Luigi Parnell, and both try to keep on the right side of DI Kate Steele.
A
s this episode opens, young Australian Naomi Lockhart is found dead, after attending a party thrown by her boss. Evidence soon points to sleazy Joseph Madden, an obnoxious character who managed a coffee shop near police headquarters and had come on to Cat.
A
s their Murder Investigation Team digs through the evidence, Cat remains haunted by the secret she keeps both from her colleagues and her lover Aiden - of evidence she suppressed relating to Cat's estranged father's involvement in the death of Aiden's sister Maryanne.
I
f the truth comes out it would destroy both Cat's career and the relationship that's becoming more and more important to her - but living the lie is damaging too. Cat's stress builds when
Uncle
Frank, a criminal close to her family, threatens her with his knowledge of what happened.
C
at solves more than one case before it's over (in a conclusion I didn't see coming) but the sword of Damocles hanging over her life remains, exacerbated by a final communication she has with her Dad - will he fix things or make it all worse?
