Erin Kelly, author of He Said/She Said, brings fans another psychological suspense novel in Stone Mothers. It involves a dark secret, which arose in the town of Nusstead, involving two young people in love, and an ambitious politician (Helen Greenlaw) with big plans for her future.

The young people separated. Marianne moved to London, enjoyed a successful career, married Sam (a History of Architecture lecturer), and they had a rather fragile daughter, Honor (with mental health issues). Marianne remained friends with her boyfriend Jesse, though his feelings were always stronger. He married as well, with children of his own.

Now Marianne's on sabbatical and staying in Nusstead, as her mother is dying. So what is the dark secret at the core of this novel? Readers find out late in the story, which moves back and forth in time to gradually reveal what happened, and that all was not as it seemed. It centers on the closure of a lunatic asylum, Nazareth Hospital, in East Anglia and its effect on the local economy and community.

The trouble begins when Jesse demands Marianne's help in blackmailing Helen Greenlaw, now a millionaire Baroness in the House of Lords. After Marianne meets with her to warn her, complications and misunderstandings abound - and finally explode. If you like psychological suspense, dive in.
