Black and Blue: A Doug Brock Thriller    by David Rosenfelt Order:  USA  Can Minotaur, 2019 (2019) Hardcover, CD, e-Book      Reviewed by Hilary Williamson Black and Blue is the third (following Blackout and Fade to Black) in David Rosenfelt's series starring New Jersey state police officer Doug Brock. The injury he sustained in the first book gave him amnesia and took away ten years of his life. He has gradually recovered some memories. He's back together with his girlfriend, cybercop Jessie Allen, who's not quite forgiven him for jilting her. They share a house with Jessie's enormous dog Bobo, 'a Newfoundland/tractor-trailer mix' who doesn't like Brock. As Black and Blue opens, Doug and his partner Nate Alvarez head to a murder scene eerily similar to that of the killing of businessman Walter Brookings eighteen months before (Brock doesn't remember that case). Both victims were shot from a distance with a high-powered weapon, one bullet through the heart. More victims follow - a lawyer, an elderly woman, a librarian - and Brock receives messages from the perp that imply many more to follow. A suspect (once in a special military unit) who seems to have ties to all the victims leads to Brock's interaction with another of Rosenfelt's series leads, defense lawyer Andy Carpenter. As always in a Rosenfelt novel, the banter between the characters moves the story along smoothly, while the puzzle at its heart presents plenty of surprises.
