T
he Echo Killing
by Christi Daugherty opens a new mystery series, set in Savannah, Georgia, and starring crime reporter Harper McClain. When Harper was twelve, she came home one day to find her mother brutally stabbed. Though the case remains unsolved, it led to her interest in journalism and crime reporting.
H
arper has a close relationship with Lieutenant Robert Smith, the policeman who comforted her that awful day fifteen years before. Smith is now head of the homicide division. The story begins with a murder that echoes that of Harper's mother - Marie Whitney is found naked and stabbed, in the same position, and with all forensic evidence meticulously erased. The killing seems professional, the murder scene disturbingly similar.
H
arper becomes obsessed with the case, recklessly crossing lines and getting into serious trouble with her bosses and with the police force. At the same time, she pursues a relationship with an undercover police officer. He becomes less and less supportive of her actions, especially after she sets her sights on a homicide detective with '
scary eyes
' as the likely perp.
I
t ends with a very surprising twist, but also with an unresolved threat to Harper, which I expect will carry over to the next episode,
A Beautiful Corpse
. I look forward to it.
