Run Cold would make a wonderful present for mystery lovers. Times do change, as old timer Jack Mabie has discovered. He claims to be the meanest man in Alaska! But nobody seems to care. Jack is just one of the 'crusty old sourdoughs' who found themselves in the world of martinis of the 1950s. Sonia Petrievich, an editor at her father's weekly pro-statehood paper, The Gold, writes an article about the so-called good-old-days and stirs up controversy between those who are against statehood and those who aren't. Edna has returned to Alaska to gather more background for the novel she is writing, Ice Palace. When Jack is found on an ice laden alleyway, beaten to death, she feels she must assist in finding who is responsible. She writes that 'I felt I had lost sight of the real Alaska ... I'd forgotten Alaska is still a frontier ... a violent, mysterious world below the glossy skin I had written about.' Learn more about the old gold scrabbling days of the gold rush and what Alaska presented of itself to the world in the 1950s. This fascinating series is well-worth a read.
