Absolute Proof    by Peter James Order:  USA  Can Pan Macmillan, 2018 (2018) Hardcover, Softcover, CD, e-Book     Reviewed by Hilary Williamson Here's something very different from acclaimed author Peter James (known for his excellent DS Roy Grace police procedurals). Absolute Proof is a mystery centered around the notion of what it would take to prove the existence of God to humanity; how such proof might not be well received in many quarters; and how easily evidence might fall by the wayside. There's quite a cast of characters. Elderly Dr. Harry Cook (ex RAF and a Professor of Art History) sounds crazy when he claims to have proof that God exists, but the investigative reporter he contacts goes along with him, thinking it might make a good story. Said investigative reporter, Ross Hunter (the story's protagonist), previously reported on a shortfall of resources for the army in Afghanistan, and also wrote about crooked preachers. When he was out of the country, his wife Imogen had an affair. She's pregnant now but he's not sure he can trust her. Villains range from a Vatican representative to pharmaceutical executives. There are threats, violence and killings, as Ross follows an elusive trail (beginning with the coordinates for the Holy Grail), initially laid out for him by Dr. Cook. Enemies are tracking him very closely all the way. As danger escalates, Imogen begs Ross to drop the investigation, but he's 'a man on a mission.' As he pursues his quest, he meets and is instantly attracted to lovely Sally Hughes, but she's related to one of his enemies; can she be trusted? Ross's quest ends in LA, where he talks to a homeless magician ... and a sign appears. Absolute Proof is not a Dan Brown thriller, and I have to admit that I prefer spending time with DS Roy Grace.
