he latest of the Duke Rogers PI Thriller Series just hit my desk. Not a moment too soon. Paul D. Marks previously wrote
White Heat
(a Shamus award winner) and we get another chance to see what Duke Rogers is up to in
Broken Windows
.
A
young woman climbs to the top of the famous Hollywood sign only to plunge to her death! An undocumented day laborer is murdered! A disbarred lawyer, at the end of his rope, places an ad in a local paper that reads '
Will do anything for money!
' What does all that have to do with anything? Well, that lawyer is the disbarred one we all know and love, Duke Rogers, now barely making a living as a PI.

uke soon finds himself in the middle of the problem of undocumented workers. Duke meets a young woman whose brother has been murdered – he was one of those undocumented laborers. His sister, also undocumented, mourns his loss and Duke offers to help her find the murderer. He takes on her case pro bono.
O
f course, what can go wrong does. Which leads to a discourse on this very real and current problem of illegal immigrants. Murder, mayhem, suicide, as well as a touch of romance and a reference to pornography, are all wrapped up in the pages of
Broken Windows
- a good read.
