f I had one serious wish to become reality, it would be the ability to talk with animals. To delve into their lives. Ask what they think of humans. And a myriad of other questions.

las! That is not to be. I'll have to settle for author Clea Simon's tales of her life while receiving thoughts from a variety of animals – her own cat, a ferret named Frank, the dogs she walks for a price. She learns their animal names in place of the sometimes cutesy one given them by their owners.

ife is rather chaotic for Pru but she manages to stay on an even keel until she is called to a forest clearing to help with an illegally trapped bear. The bear survives and takes off not to be seen again. Unfortunately, the man who is found dead at the scene was not so lucky.

ru, while not authorized to help with the investigation, resolves to solve the crime of murder while worrying why pets are disappearing from their owners' homes.
