The Corpse at the Crystal Palace
by Carola Dunn, readers are sent back to 1928 when the Palace was in its heyday. First built in Hyde Park in 1851 for the Great Exhibition, it was eventually dismantled and rebuilt in Sydenham Park. Unfortunately, it burned in 1936 and was never restored.
ortunately, for our story which takes place in 1928, the Palace was still viable and our very own Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher proposes to take a number of her family to visit the great glass building. Unfortunately, while there she finds a man dressed as a woman dead in a stall in the women's convenience. Her two young cousins rescue Daisy's nanny from certain death, finding the woman floating in a pond in the Park.
aisy is horrified at the outcome of her carefully planned outing. Nanny survives but can remember nothing of her ordeal. Police are called and are not happy to find Daisy in the center of the investigation that must ensue. She has a history of solving crimes that the police would rather she restrain herself from investigating. Her husband is Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher of Scotland Yard. Which puts the poor man in the middle between the Yard and his wife.
aisy is most anxious that Nanny (Mrs. Gilpin) recover her memory. Possibly she can name her attacker. This is a delightful mystery with a good bit of history thrown in to set the feel of the times.
