I
have to admit that when I started reading
The Trial and Execution of the Traitor George Washington
by Charles Rosenberg I really didn't think that it was the book for me. I, of course, knew that the first U.S. president had not been put on trial nor was he executed.
B
ut I quickly got caught up in the
what if
element and realized I was hooked, giving free rein to the possibility that George Washington was kidnapped and put on trial. Not only is the reader treated to this bit of alternate history, but the Revolution also comes alive. While you might have forgotten much of it, what you learned in school about the Revolution comes back to you almost in living color.
A
nd what it took to live in that time! Food was short, money even shorter. Fabric for new clothing almost unattainable. Let alone for badly needed uniforms. Even trust between family members and life-long friends became suspect. Spies for both sides were everywhere. A war to contend with! Benedict Arnold, expecting to be lauded for his desertion from the Patriots, did not receive the glory he felt was his due.
