A
second entry in the Jesse Sutherlin series –
Countdown
– proves to be another must-read mystery novel. Sadly it is the last that author Frederick Ramsey will write. In fact he did not live to finish writing
Countdown
. Author Dana Stabenow took on the task of finishing it, and did it well.
R
amsey was a prolific writer, writing nineteen books in thirteen years!! He loved what he did and proved this in everything he wrote. He created characters who became like members of readers' families. His plausible plots held interest from first page to last, plus intrigue, suspense, surprise, as well as a decidedly good sense of humor.

ack to
Countdown
. It's 1928. Jesse is working in a sawmill, looking to improve his family's living standards when he is told that his father's remains have been discovered in a pit at an ice house operation. Surprising news, since he had been told that his father had died in an influenza epidemic ten years before.
J
esse gets no interest from the local police department. So, of course, he sets out to discover if this body that was found was truly his father's. And how a mistake in identity could be made. His father carried a pocket watch the family called the
onion
because it was as big as one. And made of gold! There is also a question as to where the money the man was supposedly carrying disappeared along with the
onion
.
A
nother winner for Frederick Ramsey, whom I thank for the pleasure he brought me and so many other readers over the years.
