by author Sulari Gentill is the fifth in her series featuring Rowland Sinclair. The action takes place in London, mostly in 1933, after Rowly and his friends barely escaped Nazi Germany with their lives.
R
owly comes from a wealthy family in Australia and enjoys his unemployed status, preferring to have his more serious brother Wil handle the family estate while Rowly enjoys the benefits that accrue from a well managed property. Each episode with Rowly brings his personality closer to the reader's heart, making him a friend rather than simply someone who appears between the pages now and then.
H
is close friends are more or less hangers on who travel with him and live on his dime, which bothers Rowly not a whit. What does have him looking warily about himself is that he feels a personal threat from Germany. He also worries about those with him who might get caught in a cross fire. Rowly is horrified by how Germany has drastically changed under Hitler's dictatorship. And worries about the possibility of a devastating war.

not only takes on the years up to World War II breaking out but also deals with the personalities of the characters in this well-written novel. A touch of romance brightens the pages as does a lovely bit of humor, and of course a murder. It's hard to put down, as are the other books in Gentill'’s series.
