s Harry Ackerson is about to graduate from college, he is told that his father has just died in a freak accident. Harry feels he must help his stepmother Alice to get through the funeral, so he returns to Maine to provide support through a hard time. Harry had always felt an attraction to Alice. She was much younger than his father.

arry's father had owned two bookstores – one in New York City and one in a small village in Maine. At one of the stores, Harry meets a young woman, Grace McGowan, whom Harry feels has some connection to his family.
T
he more time Harry spends with Alice at the bookstore, the more he is attracted to her. A sexual relationship, which is hinted at by Alice, makes Harry examine his feelings more closely. He also feels something for Grace, but senses that both women are keeping secrets from him.

e feels isolated as he gets closer to them. He is sure neither woman is telling the truth. The secrets they keep could even be deadly!
