Death of Anton    by Alan Melville Order:  USA  Can Poisoned Pen, 2017 (2017) Softcover, CD, e-Book     Reviewed by Mary Ann Smyth Death of Anton by Alan Melville is one of the mysteries reprinted from the collaboration of Poisoned Pen Press and British Library Crime Classics. It was probably written in the 1930s, considered the Golden Age of Crime Writing in Britain. In it, the reader not only gets a whopping good mystery, but also a look into the lives of circus performers. Seven Bengal tigers are the star attraction of Carey's Circus. When the very fit and fearless trainer of these fine beasts is found dead in the tigers' cage, it is thought that the large cats had mauled him to death. Detective Inspector Minto of Scotland Yard feels differently and proceeds to conduct his own investigation. Minto almost becomes a part of the circus as he discovers a number of the performers could have killed the tigers' trainer. Seems most of them have secrets they don't want brought to light. Dodo the clown owns a costume that seems to have been scratched by a claw, Carey, the circus owner, has a secret he is hiding, and we must not forget the trapeze artist who is jealous of his wife's dalliance with Carey. The more suspects, the more complicated the mystery becomes. And the more enjoyable. Written with a practiced hand, this is a delightful story that deserved to be resurrected.
