Quick Curtain by Alan Melville was published in 1934. It's an enjoyable read with a really ingenious plot, written by an author with a good sense of humor. In the middle of Act Two of a new musical extravaganza produced by Mr. Douglas B. Douglas, well known by the theatrical world, the lead actor is shot to death and thus unable to finish his lines. Inspector Wilson of Scotland Yard and his son Derek happen to be in the audience. They take over the immediate investigation and their dialogue – father to son, and son to father – is a delight. Another death occurs, apparently a suicide. Does this solve the mystery of the shooting? Was the shooter overcome with remorse and did himself in? Or was the second death also murder? This is one of the best of the British mysteries from the '30s. They are all good but Quick Curtain tops them all.
