Author Ace Atkins picked up the Spenser series after the death of Robert B. Parker. In my humble opinion, he has done a fine job in taking up Parker's style of writing and giving the author's fans more of the novels we all enjoyed so much. But he has also incorporated his own style into the books and has done it so well, the transition is seamless.

A fire at a boarded-up Catholic church claims three firefighters' lives. Firefighter Jack McGee lost his best friend in this fire and doesn't believe it was an accident. He is sure it was caused by arson!

McGee presses Spenser to investigate. Against his better judgment, Spenser starts looking into the fire and many other fires that have been plaguing Boston. This leads him into the underworld. Which leads him into dealing with those he would prefer to avoid. He loves his life with Susan and their wonder dog Pearl. But he is sure he is making progress – even at the peril of his own life.

Crisp, clear writing that is dosed with Spenser's unique sense of humor makes for good reading. Thank you Mr. Atkins.
