Frank August and Bill Hough (pronounced Hawk) both seemed to enjoy conflict. Many arguments ensued that have no beginning and no end. They just liked to better each other.

This plot unfolds back on the flood plains of the Columbia River Gorge. For some unknown reason Hough commits suicide. Jane August is an artist and is visiting her estranged father and his fifth wife. (She is a plot in herself!)

Both families are winemakers. Jane's father disappears. Undersheriff Rob Neill is involved when Frank August's body is uncovered by a bulldozer working in an orchard. Chief Madeline Thomas of the Klalos clan attempts to clear the land of violence.

If all this seems unconnected, stick with it. The plot takes off running and the characters involved play their parts well. Author Sheila Simonson has written fifteen novels. She uses words as though they were her friends.
