Nick Tapalansky's story works well on its own, but combined with Anissa Espinosa's artwork in the graphic novel, it is magical. Greg is not happy with the current state of things. His father's girlfriend is moving in with them and his best friend has started dating his arch-nemesis. Greg just wants life to go back to normal. The only good thing that has happened is meeting Eleanor, the ghost of a girl who lives in the town's old haunted mansion. That might seem strange enough, but things get weirder when someone who looks like Greg starts terrorizing the town. It is going to take the help of all of Greg's friends, old and new, to put a stop to the great wickedness that has been unleashed. Cast No Shadow could very well be a full-length novel, but then it would be missing Espinso's fantastic artwork, which takes the story to new depths, heightening Greg's inner turmoil. This is so much more than a supernatural fantasy; it is the story of Greg coming to terms with what he can and cannot change. Like any good YA novel, Cast No Shadow has dynamic characters and great pacing, and is a fun and satisfying read. Nick Tapalansky has written a great story that is elevated by Anissa Espinosa's illustrations. I hope to see more from this talented duo.
