The Lies We Tell
has a unique one. Chicago police detective Gina Simonetti suffers from multiple sclerosis - and she's keeping her condition a secret, even though it affects her work. Complicating matters, she has also taken over responsibility for her small niece Isabel from her deadbeat brother George.
G
ina's secret is jeopardized after she is asked to help deal with Johnny Marble. He's been accused of assaulting his own mother, who has Alzheimer's. When Gina confronts him at the hospital, she drops her gun. He escapes with the gun just before security guard Calvin shows up. So Gina lies about how it went down - to her partner Andy and to another cop, Ray Weiss, who's also looking for Marble, whom he sees as a '
giant child
'.
G
ina keeps digging, even though she's on medical leave - and finds that nothing is as it appeared on the surface. She loses Isabel; she's attacked with a knife; and she's threatened with worse. But she persists - and she finally asks for help. While still a patient herself, Gina uncovers a far-reaching hospital financial scam. She also finally comes to terms with her own condition.

is a good and unusual mystery.
