Played!    by Michael A. Kahn Order:  USA  Can Poisoned Pen, 2017 (2017) Softcover, e-Book      Reviewed by Mary Ann Smyth Milton Bernstein is a committed lawyer, dedicated to the law, to his clients, and to his younger brother Hal. Hal is dedicated to getting by in life without working – being a penniless playboy, living and loving an unhindered life, and his brother Milton, not necessarily in that order. Hal had been a dedicated baseball player, a really good one, destined for the big leagues. But a motorcycle accident put an end to that dream. Milton spends a good deal of time getting Hal out of scrapes – however this latest is a little more serious than the usual ones. Hal's girlfriend, Cherry Pitts (this is the name given her) is the wife of a 'shark-like litigator' who is about to be arrested for fraud. When he is murdered, the police arrest Hal for the deed. Played! is, unfortunately too short. I really enjoyed it. Wanted more of Milt and Hal. There are no unnecessary words in this book, which is written strictly for story and characters. And it works. Well. Fans of the late Robert B. Parker will love this legal thriller. Kahn is the author of a number of novels – all well worth the read.
