A skeleton is found in a hidden crypt of a church on the coast of Inishowen, Ireland, that has been de-consecrated and put up for sale. The local community is sure the skeleton is that of Conor Devitt, who disappeared on his wedding day six years before. A postmortem proves it is not Conor.

Benedicta 'Ben' O'Keeffe is a solicitor acting for the owners of the church. Conor's brother dies in a strange accident which leads Ben to question where Conor might be. Whose skeleton has been found? How did it come to rest in the crypt?

Many secrets weave around the inhabitants of Inishowen. However none of them help in Ben's private investigations. She has to contend with Tom Molloy, a handsome but surly Sergeant of the local constabulary. She is smitten by him but confused by his seemingly on-again-off-again attitude towards her.

Ben manages to unearth much of the history of Inishowen both personal and political - which just seems to send her in different directions, but gives no solutions. What happened six years ago to result in a body in the crypt, and why?

Death at Whitewater Church by Andrea Carter is a first novel which was a winner of the Irish Writers Centre Novel Fair. It's a good read, which brought many lovely memories of my trips to Ireland.
