The Undesired by Icelandic author Yrsa Sigurdardottir (translated by Victoria Cribb) is just one of many thrillers that she has written and that readers all over the world have enjoyed. She is being published in N. America by Minotaur Press and I, for one, am so pleased to make her acquaintance.

We first meet Aldis while she is working as a cleaner at a juvenile detention center in rural Iceland. She hates her job, but took it to escape the home life that had become toxic to her. At night she is a witness to something so disturbing that it gives her the fright of her life.

Fast forward decades later when we get to know single father and widower Odinn, who is looking into potential allegations of past physical abuse in juvenile centers. He took over a specific case after the demise of a colleague who had been conducting an investigation into the deaths of two young boys back when Aldis was in the picture.

The more Odinn digs into the past deaths, the more he realizes that those events are linked to current ones. This makes him wonder if his colleague's death really was from natural causes.

This is one of those hard to put down books - and the ending is a real shocker. No wonder that the author is such a popular writer. I look forward to more of this talented, hugely successful international crime writer's work.
