(translated by Ebba Segerberg) follows
as the seventh in a quirky Swedish police procedural series (with international themes) starring homicide Inspector Ann Lindell. It's hard not to like Ann. Though committed, stubborn and persistent on the job, she's always conflicted and vulnerable in her personal life.
opens on the horrific hit-and-run that kills a beautiful young, pregnant mother and her six-year-old daughter. Of course, the missing dad is the immediate suspect, but everyone he knows tells of how much he loved his daughter - why would Sven-Erik do it? Ann leads the Violent Crimes investigation.
hey learn that Sven-Erik owned half of MedForsk, a rising company that develops pharmaceuticals, with strong connections to a daughter company in Malaga, Spain. He had just bought a house in the Dominican Republic but none of his colleagues can understand why. And he had been arguing vehemently with his co-owner/CEO Jack.
s the investigation progresses, Ann's ex-lover Edvard (for whom she still has strong feelings) calls out of the blue - does he want to renew their relationship and is she ready for that? They renew contact and all looks good - but it never seems to stay that way for Ann, who keeps a poor balance between work and personal life.
he discovers that Sven-Erik had a lover; an animal lovers protest against MedForsk turns violent; and there are more murders (one victim interred in a
). And, though Ann does identify and arrest the killer, an even more terrible crime goes unpunished. If you haven't found this thought provoking series yet, it's well worth your time.
