Laura Salters' Perfect Prey tells a story of two young magazine fashion interns (and best friends) Carina Corbett and Erin Baxter. Of the pair, Carina suffers regular anxiety attacks, while Erin has her back and keeps her on course. But that will soon change.

The mystery opens in Belgrade, where they have pushed for assignments to cover a Serbian music festival. Carina shares the experience with readers, enjoying it overall until Erin vanishes after an evening at the festival. It takes a while for everyone to take Carina's concerns seriously, but when they do, she becomes a Significant Witness in the police investigation.

After intensive interviews with Serbian police, Carina returns to England but can't let go. She becomes obsessed with what happened to Erin and investigates, losing her internship and her chance of a real job. She eventually returns to Serbia with Erin's mother Karen and continues digging there - which soon gets her into real trouble.

Carina discovers that some of Erin's family members had a terrible illness, Aubin's syndrome and that Serbian pharmaceutical company Bastixair is researching it. She rushes headlong into danger, seeking her friend, and comes close to vanishing permanently herself. But Carina refuses to be perfect prey and fights back.
