If you are planning a trip to Italy, you should definitely add the town of Orvieto to your must-see list. I've been there and can heartily recommend this stop. Where else will you see a black and white cathedral?

I can also heartily recommend reading Return to Umbria by David P. Wagner. You will find a wonderful tour guide extolling the virtues of this lovely city, as well as a murder mystery entangled with the guide. You can take a ride on a funicular while pondering why a murder happened at all.

Italian-American Ricardo Montoya left Santa Fe, New Mexico (his father's home) to work as a freelance interpreter in Rome (his mother's home). Return to Umbria is the fourth adventure for Rick. I can call him by his first name as I feel as though he were part of my family.

Rick has a companion on this trip and is hoping for a romantic interlude with Betta Innocenti, whom he met in a previous novel. His uncle implores him to talk to the uncle's son, Fabrizio, and convince him that the young man's fascination with a much older woman can only end badly.

Back to Orvieto. A woman who studied there many years ago returns to right a wrong. She is killed and Rick is called to act as interpreter between possible witnesses and the police. When a disreputable reporter is also killed, Rick tries to tie the two deaths together. Travel guide or murder? You can have both in this cleverly written mystery novel.
