'This is not a book to help you negotiate a term sheet or value a seed-round for a new enterprise. Nor will it lay out the tactics for forcing a new project through layers of corporate bureaucracy,' writes the author. 'But it will describe the ways in which you will need to think as you decide first whether to be an entrepreneur, then what ideas to pursue and how to survive the inevitable challenges.'

After discussing the entrepreneurial mind, or at least his concept of it, Philip Delves Broughton takes a quick look at the history of entrepreneurship and the idea of becoming an entrepreneur. Then he focuses on searching for an entrepreneurial opportunity, responding to that opportunity and exploiting it to its fullest potential.

Don't expect to find a detailed game plan on how to transform yourself into a successful entrepreneur in this short book, for that isn't going to happen. In a conversational and highly accessible narrative, Broughton offers a series of generalities fashioned around a number of anecdotes that introduce a number of individuals who have been successful in pursuing their ideas and transforming a business plan into a recognizable product or company.

Although I found this both a quick and an entertaining read, I did not really learn anything new about the subject matter. I have operated my own business for a number of years and written extensively about successful businessmen and women in the agricultural sector. Broughton stated what I already knew about what motivates and how success is measured in the business world.

On the other hand, I liked the book well enough to pass it on to a younger person I know who, I believe, might benefit from the generalities featured here. Perhaps this will inspire him to do further and more detailed reading on the subject.
