I
f you are a fan of the series featuring Special Agent A.X.L. Pendergast, you'll find this latest adventure much to your liking. In fact, this one of the most intriguing installments the series authors have penned since they joined forces to create this unforgettable character.
T
he key players here include Pendergast, his ward Constance, and the agent's brother, Diogenes, who has been a key adversary in previous thrillers.
T
he fast paced tale begins with Pendergast missing and presumed dead after his last outing that culminated with a shocking disaster at Exmouth, Massachusetts. Constance has retreated to the agent's 891 Riverside Drive home in New York City where she has isolated herself as she tries to come to terms with the apparent loss of her guardian and friend.
B
ut when the grieving young woman is kidnapped by a surprising abductor, a chain of events begins that concludes on an island enclave off Florida where the Pendergast brothers have a shattering violent reunion of sorts.
T
o say the least, there's been bad blood between the two men and Constance has been caught up in the conflict as well, but the causes of the problem haven't been clear up to now. Finally, light is shed not only on the reasons for the siblings' animosity but also where Constance fits into the picture.
A
s one would expect, there are plenty of interesting and unexpected twists and turns in
The Obsidian Chamber
but it appears the series may be making a change in direction as well. Given the revelations about the key characters and how this novel concludes, one wonders where Preston and Child intend to take this popular series in the future. Obviously, there are more adventures to come, so in a year or so the answer should be forthcoming!
