I
wasn't sure I would enjoy this young adult novel. I thought that the setting of Victorian London combined with the leading character, a young woman, might be a bit bland. I was pleased to find nothing of the sort between the pages of this book.
M
ary has led an extraordinary life. She was orphaned at twelve, and also convicted, sent to, and saved from the gallows some time after being orphaned. By seventeen years old she began working as an undercover detective for the Agency. Now Mary has received an offer of marriage from James, her coworker at the Agency.
W
hile deciding on her life's next move, Mary becomes embroiled in the saga of the Thorold family. Henry Thorold is spending his last days in prison and his estranged wife, and also murderer, may have come out of hiding and returned to the city.
W
ith the return of the murderess, Mary must try to catch her before Mary herself is caught and becomes Mrs. Thorold's next victim. Along the way, Mary finds help in the most unexpected places from interesting people. I was captivated by the family secrets, romance, and conflicting loyalties in this smartly written novel.
