The body of Jane Trundle has been found on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors. On a dark and windy night, she is
discovered lying face down, on the cobblestones of the village of Gunnershaw.

Sergeant Caleb Cluff is assigned the case. Cluff does not play by the rules. He goes about his work his own way. Often he seems to be way off track in solving a murder but always gets his man. He is hampered by the strict and staid way of life of the inhabitants of the village. But this does not stop him from following what he considers to be the right methods to close another murder.

The Methods of Sergeant Cluff was published in 1961 as one of the British Library Crime Classics and is now reissued by Poisoned Pen Press. Sergeant Cluff is a man determined to live life his own way and that includes solving crimes as he sees fit. The reader can't help but like the character portrayed by Gil North. I silently cheered him on as I read of his seemingly bumbling attempts to catch a criminal. By Jove, he does it. And does it well.
