I had trouble getting past the cover of Red Dog. But by the time I had finished the first page, I knew this was a book for me. Slim, a former coal miner but now a PI, is hired to find a missing dog – a sweet little red pit bull. The strange owners are sure it was dog-napped. When the dognapper is found with his head blown off, of course, authorities are sure Slim is responsible. Which we know he isn't.

Trying to absolve himself of the crime, Slim falls into another gross crime – dog fighting. Oh yeah, also white supremacy militias! Author Miller, I understand, is an animal lover and has managed to incorporate real live facts about this illegal sport in his writing. These facts are horrifying but true nonetheless.

Back to Slim. He is in this dark world over his head and is threatened, kidnapped, and tortured. An attempt is made to burn down his house with Slim and his daughter Anci in it. Anci is a pure delight. Precocious with an irreverent tongue, she matches wits with her father which makes for some wonderful dialogue. Slim, while looking for this red dog, finds far more than he was looking for. Or even wanted to find.

The first book in this series was Down Don't Bother Me. Don't miss Red Dog. Slim is a character I'd like to know. And his surroundings open up a part of the world I didn't know. Nor wish to know. Good book.
