Sarah Booth Delaney resides in Dalhia House, her ancestral home in Zinnia, Mississippi along with canine Sweetie Pie, three horses, a cat, and a chatty haint named Jitty. She and her BFF Tinkie own and operate a local detective agency, and it seems that all the males in the area (aside from Tinkie's husband Oscar) have a thing for Sarah. Note that a recent attack on her fiance Scott Hampton's blues club ended that relationship, leaving her heartbroken.

As this sixteenth episode in Carolyn Haines' popular series opens, pumpkin spatter flies all over Sarah's kitchen as she persists in a misguided attempt to make Thanksgiving pies - she plans to host a feast at Dalhia House for all her friends. During the night, she is alerted by Jitty to answer the ringing doorbell and finds quite a surprise on her front porch - a newborn baby in a basket, a pool of blood seeping from it and an older Ford pickup speeding away.

The baby is okay but, given the blood, Sarah is very concerned about the health of the mother. Sunflower County Sheriff Coleman Peters agrees to allow Sarah and Tinkie to take care of the baby for forty-eight hours before he calls child services. But Tinkie, who has desperately wanted her own child, bonds immediately and firmly with the infant they name Libby. Sarah races against time to find small Libby's mother, concerned both for her and for Tinkie.

Complicating matters, Sarah's nemesis, Gertrude Strom, awaiting trial for murder, is on the run, and very probably out for revenge. Can Sarah stay safe and also solve this latest mystery of a missing mom? If you like your cozies as light and fluffy as Sarah's pies are definitely not, then dip into this engaging series.
