Emilia and Teo grew up together as children of two stunt-pilot mothers in 1930s America - they were always a double act. But Teo's mom died when a bird strike brought down their plane. Though Em's mom Rhoda was never the same afterwards (she lost her soulmate), she raised them both. But they faced discrimination, as Teo was black and Em and her mother white.

So Rhoda moves her small family to Ethiopia (Teo's dead father was Ethiopian and it was his mother's dream to live there), where she continues to fly planes for a living. Em and Teo keep on telling stories together about their adventures. Eventually, though she's reluctant, Rhoda teaches them both to fly. And they meet the newly crowned Emperor Haile Selassie.

Readers discover Ethiopia with the children and it's a wonderful life - until war comes as the Italians invade (and Em's father is Italian). The family is steadily pulled into the war and Teo learns a shocking fact about his birthright - and lack of rights. Will Teo and Em be able to stay together, as war and conflicting loyalties pull them apart?

Black Dove White Raven is a fascinating read, with a window into the 1930s in both America and Ethiopia, during an era of great turbulence worldwide. And Em and Teo are wonderful characters, very real, brave yet vulnerable, and likable.
