I like to visit libraries wherever I go. But I have never been to the 42nd Street Library. Murder at the 42nd Street Library by Con Lehane brought me to the very doors of this wonderful place and granted me entrance. Using this library as setting in a tale of murder, mayhem, intrigue, sly and witty dialogue, and a cast of characters not to be forgotten, Lehane presents a mystery that carries us smoothly through from first page to last. On the second floor of this 'iconic beaux-arts flagship of the New York Public Library system', a man is murdered in full view of a witness – Ray Ambler, the curator of the crime fiction collection. Mike Cosgrove, a homicide detective and friend of Ambler's, arrives determined to solve the murder and keep Ambler out of the investigation. As readers, we meet a missing crime writer's daughter; a young boy with a tale of his own; a high society woman with a hidden past; and a colleague of Ambler's - among others just as vital to the story. Murder at the 42nd Street Library has enough suspense to keep you reading well into the night. I did have a problem with keeping Ambler as a man in my mind. I kept reading his name as Amber. His girl friend's name of Adele, starting with another 'A' at times caught me up short. But don't let that minor observation keep you from a captivating mystery.
