A young man's body (covered in strange occult symbols) has been found in a vineyard in the small North Carolina town of Celosia. The symbols alert PI Maddy Maclin that there is probably a witch in the neighborhood. Or more than one?

Darkrose Coven had been formed many years ago in Celosia, and has been slowly dying out. However, the young people of this small community have revived it. Membership is validated by having a dark rose tattooed on one's wrist.

A centennial celebration is being planned in Celosia. Unfortunately, the planning is being wrested from the hands of those who could make the town proud. An extremely obnoxious woman, Amanda Price, bullies everyone into backing her plans. Harold Stover, a village council member, contests Amanda's approach. When he is murdered, all eyes accusingly turn to her.

Amanda hires Maddy to find the person responsible for Harold's death. Maddy is not happy to help Amanda, but a job is a job. The plot twists and turns with unexpected happenings as Amanda demands more and more from her minions.

To add spice to the story, Maddy's husband is an ex-con man. At least she hopes it's in his past. Keeping her eye on him complicates her life even more while she searches for a murderer.
